The party arrived to witness a scene of utter devastation. Wreckage along with dead bodies were washing up on the beach as each large wave crashed ashore. Tomas could be heard uttering prayers of protection along with Alburg and Fredrick who were shocked at the sight. Cassandra and Rowan searched for Shawn, but it was Fredrick who spotted him standing still near the water’s edge. He was hard to spot amongst all the debris, and it was not until he turned and waved his arm that his movement caught the eye. ‘Praise to the Father … he is unhurt,’ uttered Cassandra and squeezed Rowan’s hand. More and more people started to gather on the dunes looking down onto the beach to watch as the prior and his party made their way cautiously to the beach where the lone man was standing.

‘The wind and waves pushed the boat onto the shallow reef, totally destroyed it,’ said Sean. Tomas had no idea what a reef was but said nothing as Shawn pulled one of the bodies out of the shallows, so the gathered people could get a look at it. Sean studied one face after another.

‘There is another thing,’ said Sean, grabbing their attention. ‘There is a survivor; you can see him clinging to those rocks out past the breakers, over there by the white cliffs.’ He pointed to where he meant, and one by one people started to shout when they spotted the lone survivor who was clinging frantically for his life. ‘He looks to be a young boy; he does not look like a warrior from what I can tell,’ said Sean.

‘Best he drowns!’ cursed Walter. Alburg looked at his apprentice nodding his head in agreement.

‘No, if he survives, we can question him; he might know where the other boat is sailing for and what plans they have for us!’ emphasised Cassandra as she looked at the gathered men. The prior was not moved by what she said. ‘Nothing can be
