The party arrived to witness a scene of utter devastation. Wreckage along with dead bodies were washing up on the beach as each large wave crashed ashore. Tomas could be heard uttering prayers of protection along with Alburg and Fredrick who were shocked at the sight. Cassandra and Rowan searched for Shawn, but it was Fredrick who spotted him standing still near the waterâs edge. He was hard to spot amongst all the debris, and it was not until he turned and waved his arm that his movement caught the eye. âPraise to the Father ⦠he is unhurt,â uttered Cassandra and squeezed Rowanâs hand. More and more people started to gather on the dunes looking down onto the beach to watch as the prior and his party made their way cautiously to the beach where the lone man was standing.
âThe wind and waves pushed the boat onto the shallow reef, totally destroyed it,â said Sean. Tomas had no idea what a reef was but said nothing as Shawn pulled one of the bodies out of the shallows, so the gathered people could get a look at it. The body, that of a man had been bashed and ripped by the rocks and waves, but Sean was hoping they could judge whether it was Samarian or not. The man looked nondescript, short, but muscular, with a gleaming sword tied to his back. Sean rolled the body over, so they could get a better look. The intakes of breath from those gathered and the cursing confirmed it. âThat is a Samarian scimitar ⦠of that I am certain, Prior,â cursed Alburg. Sean could read the fear etched on their faces.
âI have some more bad news, Tomas, but another longboat with the same red coloured sail as this one sailed past earlier, it kept itself further out and away from the reef and waited until this one was destroyed before it sailed away.â Sean pointed in the direction it had sailed. âMayhaps they be sailing for Brynworth?â suggested Fredrick. âWe should send word to the earl; he needs to be warned so that he can take precautions,â said Cassandra. Sean studied one face after another.
âThere is another thing,â said Sean, grabbing their attention. âThere is a survivor; you can see him clinging to those rocks out past the breakers, over there by the white cliffs.â He pointed to where he meant, and one by one people started to shout when they spotted the lone survivor who was clinging frantically for his life. âHe looks to be a young boy; he does not look like a warrior from what I can tell,â said Sean.
âBest he drowns!â cursed Walter. Alburg looked at his apprentice nodding his head in agreement.
âNo, if he survives, we can question him; he might know where the other boat is sailing for and what plans they have for us!â emphasised Cassandra as she looked at the gathered men. The prior was not moved by what she said. âNothing can be
